Being compassionate, positive, kind and self-caring … all small acts that don’t always come quickly or easily in the daily life of a caregiver.
A carer’s world is rife with opportunities for misconceptions, mistakes, negative self-talk, closed doors and isolation, at time. The day-to-day landscape can become as rugged, as rugged, can be. So, how can we help each other and hold it together so to speak. And, how can we start to embrace each day with new found lightness.
Let’s start by focusing on what’s right. Learn ways to tolerate your own make mistakes without self-criticism and self-judgement. Keep prioritizing acts that craft a social circle with people who have positive energy that’ll help you see the good. Taking time to do things that you do well, that are entertaining, or skill developing and praise worthy goes a long way to provide relief and restore a bit of balance. Some suggest a mantra to meditate on and help distract, refocus and regroup their thoughts.
No matter what, capture a minute for yourself and a breath when the going gets tough. You’re not alone as a caregiver. There are lots of others on similar journeys. Experts suggest:
1. Taking a mindful moment each night and consider the good you’ve done during the day.
2. Avoiding negativity and glass half empty people and situations whenever you can. 3. Respecting and acknowledging yourself and all that you do.
4. Celebrating and be proud of small wins not the losses.
5. Giving yourself a break.
And, perhaps the best advice of all…Be mindful. Be grateful. Be human!
