The Scoop

Enjoying the PUBLIC library, It’s Free!

Reading regularly can keep your loved one’s mind stimulated and help them stave off Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related disorders. Here are a few reasons why you should consider using the library…

1) For older adults who have difficulty reading standard print, most libraries have a collection of large-print books, including a wide variety of brand new titles.

2) Many public libraries recognize the needs of seniors in the community and provide programs designed for them. Things like yoga, book clubs, and knitting or quilting circles. Larger libraries are also hiring Senior Service Librarians.

3) Your loved one is living on a fixed income so purchasing books may no longer be an option. Libraries often have multiple copies of new books.

4) For the housebound elderly, libraries frequently offer delivery and pick-up.

A Dog Walker: Is It the Right for You?

If health-related difficulties, your lifestyle or your career are making it difficult for you to get your dog the proper outdoor exercise they need, you might be considering hiring a dog walker. It’s a great way to help your pooch stay happy and healthy. When the time comes to find the right dog walker for you, a great place to start is through recommendations. Talk to friends, dog owners, your veterinarian or groomer, they may have recommendations of people near you.

Things you should toss

Clean-up for your home for better health. Start by getting rid of:

1) Old Plastic Containers: Throw away any plastic stamped with a 7 or “PC” as regular washings can lead to BPA leakage.

2) Air Fresheners: Many contain phthalates, used to make fragrances hang around.

3) Frayed Toothbrush: Worn-down brushes are less effective at cleaning teeth and fighting tooth decay.

4) Stale Spices: Lose their flavour and will not do anything in your favourite recipes.

5) Old Sunscreen: Expiration dates matter, ingredients wear down exposing skin to damage.

6) Your Kitchen Sponge: The germiest item in your house and should be replaced for a washcloth.
