Pickpockets use distraction
Police are warning the public of a new generation of pickpockets on the prowl. Thieves wearing medical face masks engage their victim, often a senior, asking for directions or making friendly conversation in order to distract them. While they’re chatting, wallets are taken, pockets are picked and valuables are stolen.

Muscle waisting with age
Most us will experience a loss of skeletal muscle mass (grown and developed through exercise and nutrition) and function—the ability to perform normal activities. This is known as sarcopenia. Frailty and sarcopenia overlap as they share similar characteristics but they don’t always occur together. Identifying and diagnosing early may help treatment or management.

Wearables for PTSD
For the first time that a wearable, non-invasive device can measure activity in human cervical nerves in clinical settings. Called an optically pumped magnetometer, it provides a real-time, tool for detecting activity in the involuntary nervous system—an early indicator of bodily stress. It was designed as a flexible, adhesive-integrated electrode array in 2022 and now, a new study is testing its ability to detect deep neural activity in a simulated hyperinflammatory model.

Treating COVID fatigue
Newcastle University researchers have shed light on one of the most common side effects of long COVID-19 – ongoing fatigue. The team says preliminary findings show that they may indeed have a treatment for this debilitating condition. In a new study the team will test the effectiveness of an existing TENS machine to alleviate the fatigue in patients with long COVID. This device is most commonly used in childbirth to alleviate pain.
